Martyrs (2008) - FRANCE

Martyrs is a 2008 French Drama/Horror film directed by Pascal Laugier . This movie tells the story of Anna, once a little girl, found wandering a year later on a country road virtually catatonic after suffering some sort of physical abuse. She grows into a comely young woman, but she's got serious issues. She also has a close friend, Lucie, who she ultimately calls after she finds herself in an unusual house in the middle of the forest. There's something very disturbing about the Bauhaus-esque home, something Anna can't quite put her finger on.

Martyrs is not just another mindless horror film . It combines horror with emotion , Very Similar to Inside if you are thinking about the gore in it . The central performances are top notch and Jessie Pham as the young Lucie is very convincing, completely holding your attention.Martyrs truly is a monster. It's a ground breaking, brave, stunning, brutal & moving piece of work that is guaranteed to divide audiences everywhere it gets the chance to play.The first hour and a bit of Martyrs was quite effective in delivering unsettling imagery and sounds. Elements of child abuse is something that is certainly unnerving so it's subtext in the film added to the creepiness factor. Though almost maddening in its unevenness, Martyrs ultimately comes off as an unusually provocative horror effort that's sure to leave viewers thinking and talking about it long after the end credits have rolled.

Martyrs is shocking, vicious, fascinating, ugly, merciless, and brutal. Fortunately for horror fans with very strong fortitudes, it's also very darkly entertaining and strangely fascinating. It's one of the most fascinating pieces of "hardcore" horror cinema you'd ever want to see.

If you had already seen the Inside and liked it , then this movie is for you . Go for it.

Eyes Without a Face ( Les Yeux sans visage) is a 1959 French horror film adaptation of Jean Redon's novel of the same name. Directed by French filmmaker Georges Franju, the film stars Pierre Brasseur as Doctor Génessier, Alida Valli as Louise and Edith Scob as Christiane Génessier. The plot revolves around the obsessive Doctor Génessier attempting experimental heterografting surgery to restore his daughter Christiane's face which has been horribly disfigured in a car accident. With the help of Louise, Doctor Génessier lures young women into his home laboratory to perform experiments on them that will restore Christiane's beauty.


Eyes Without a Face has the staging and rhythm of Noir, and, up until one incredible scene, employs horror with implication and ambiance. A classic French horror famous for its cult status.
It’s not a masterpiece but it certainly isn’t forgettable.It has some queasy scenes, but unclear progression and plodding direction give this an old-fashioned air. As absurd and as beautiful as a fairy tale. A masterpiece of poetic horror and tactful, tactile brutality.

Not much to tell about this , as this is a classic horror , very few people likes to watch classic horror as modern horror movies are dominating at present . But this is a must watch for horror movie fans or to keep in their collection .

[Rec] (2007) - SPAIN

REC (or [●REC]) is a 2007 Spanish horror film co-directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza.
The camerawork and basic concept is familiar to The Blair Witch Project in that it's recorded entirely on "amateur" camera, where the cameraman is also just a character in the story. The film name, derived from the blinking text showing that the camera is recording, underlines the idea.

REC revolves around a television reporter, Ángela, and her cameraman, Pablo, who cover the night shift in one of Barcelona's local fire stations. The firehouse receives a call from an old lady trapped in her house. When they arrive, and the firemen and the police break down the door, the old lady suddenly attacks and bites one of the policemen, and it is revealed that an unknown but virulent disease is infecting people, causing them to turn into zombies.

This is truly a superb horror movie. The way it's filmed helps us to live this "nightmare" as it was for real, as if it was a news article.

At its best, "[REC]" is a stress test, with genuinely frightening and surreal use of grainy, fidgety camerawork and eerie night-vision.Gripping, unsettling and truly horrific, [REC] is much more than the gimmick suggested by its title. Prepare to squirm, wince and wonder at how a potential Blair Witch knock-off is quite so grimy and engrossing. And don’t eat dinner before you see it.

The final reel is real eyes-behind-your-fingers type stuff with the filmmakers cranking up the audience's apprehension to I-really-would-rather-be-somewhere-else levels.

Best part about the movie is its brilliantly staged early scare signals that the safety rails are off and, despite an unexpected, last-minute swerve into the supernatural realm, the edge-of-the-seat tension is sustained to the very last second.

A US remake is undergoing production and is expected to be release this October , 2008. named as Quarantine .

As research for his latest book, Enslin is determined to check out the notorious room 1408 in a New York City hotel by personally staying as a guest in the fabled room. He believes that 1408 is just a myth perpetuated by stories and rumors that Enslin has collected for his past works. However, hotel manager Mr. Olin has strong objections to Enslin's stay and only warns him of possible danger to come. Enslin is determined to go anyway. But what Mike Enslin is about to experience is no myth, as 1408 truly is a room where the guests don't check out by noon.

A truly great horror film, with great performance by Cusack. Well worth your money and time. If you are a Stephen King fan, then you will love this movie. I also suggest that you pick up and read the short story Room 1408. The movie truly captures the essence of the story, and when watching it, you'll think "Wow... this is definitely a Stephen King movie."

From the start, it builds to a point of unbearable tension and then rewards us with a payoff that is cleverly executed and genuinely terrifying. Some scenes definitely make you jump off your seat especially the window scene in the movie . Check this scene HERE

The Innocents (1961) - UK

The Innocents is a 1961 horror film based on the novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

The Innocents tells the story of an inexperienced governess, and daughter of a country parson (Kerr) who is hired to care for the niece and nephew of a callous socialite (Redgrave) at his country mansion, Bly House, whilst he continues to reside in London. Outwardly the children are little darlings, but the governess begins to feel that there's something unwholesome behind those beatific smiles. After several disturbing examples of the children's evil impulses, Miss Giddens gets information from the housekeeper (Megs Jenkins) that suggests that the children may be possessed by malign spirits -- or are all these events just the products of Miss Giddens's own imagination? The best and most frightening vignette in The Innocents occurs when the governess casually kisses young Miles, then recoils in horror when she realizes that someone other than Miles has kissed her back.

Kerr is on top form here, enacting a role that takes perfect advantage of her respectable facade wrestling with unspeakable turbulence beneath the surface. Wonderful adult horror, stylishly well-made and frightening on a couple of levels.

It's masterly in every way with a great performance from Deborah Kerr as the troubled Victorian governess, superb black-and-white widescreen photography by Freddie Francis and Georges Auric's last, truly distinguished score.

An impressively creepy adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. Creates an appropriately spooky tone that builds slowly, incrementally, until it reaches a shattering conclusion.

Overall a good classic horror to watch out for.
