Profondo rosso (1975) - ITLAY

One more classic horror from director of Suspiria - Dario argento .

Profondo rosso ( Deep Red in english ) is a story about a musician who witnesses the murder of a famous psychic, and then teams up with a fiesty reporter to find the killer while evading attempts on their lives by the unseen killer bent on keeping a dark secret buried.

s with most of Argento's work, the viewer should not try to make too much sense out of the plot, but rather enjoy the rich subtext and visual tapestry with which Argento paints the screen. The killings, most notably done with a hatchet, are inventive and decidedly gruesome.

Halloween ( 1978 ) - USA

Now the John Carpenter's classic horror Halloween .

This movie centers around a psychotic murderer who institutionalized since childhood escapes on a mindless rampage while his doctor chases him through the streets.

The film contains little graphic violence and gore.

This movie was a hit at that time and still considered as a classic. The acting is roundelay good. PJ Soles provides much of the films limited humor (and one of the best deaths), Nancy Loomis turns in a decent performance and then there is the young (at the time) Jamie Leigh-Curtis. Her performance at first seems shy and un-assured, yet you quickly realize that it is perfect for the character, who is herself shy and un-assured and not at all prepared for what she is to face. And of course there is the perfectly cast Donald Pleasence as the determined (perhaps a little unstable) Dr. Sam Loomis. Rest in peace Mr. Pleasence.

If the film has a detrimental flaw, it would be the passage of time. Since the release of this film so many years ago nearly countless clones, copies, rip-offs, and imitators have come along and stolen (usually badly) the films best bits until nearly everything about it has become familiar. Combined with the changes for audience expectations and appetites, one finds much of the films raw power diluted. To truly appreciate it in this day and age, it must be viewed as it once was, as something unique.

Never the less, I have no reservation with highly recommending this film to anyone looking for a good, scary time.

Diaboliques, Les ( 1955 ) - FRANCE

This is a classic horror thriller from France directed by Henri - Georges Clouzot . The film created a sensation on its original release. The film gained additional press when only five years after its release, VĂ©ra Clouzot died of a heart attack at age 47, similar to the way her character in the film died.

Regarding the story : The wife and mistress of a sadistic boarding school headmaster plot to kill him. They drown him in the bathtub and dump the body in the school's filthy swimming pool... but when the pool is drained, the body has disappeared - and subsequent reported sightings of the headmaster slowly drive his 'killers' (and the audience) up the wall with almost unbearable suspense...

This film was #49 on Bravo's 100 most scariest moments .

"Les Diaboliques" has one of the best plots you will ever find in any mystery or suspense thriller. The excellent directing, acting, and writing combine with the story itself to make it a memorable experience.
Even if you do not normally watch black-and-white films or foreign movies (this is in French), if you enjoy thrillers, watch "Les Diaboliques" as soon as you have the chance.
Great suspense horror thriller to watch for .

Kuroneko ( 1968 ) - JAPAN

Now the classic japanese horror of 1968 - Kuroneko ( Black Cat in english ) directed by Kaneto Shindo . It is a story about a woman and her daughter who were raped and murdered by soldiers during a time of civil war. Afterwards, a series of samurai returning from the war through that area are found mysteriously dead with their throats torn out. The governor calls in a wild and fierce young hero, to quell what is evidently a ghost. He encounters the two beautiful women, in an eery, beautiful scene. After spiritual purification, he meets the demon in a thrilling fight.

Shindo's Kuroneko is an absolute classic of the genre. The film is full of imagery an atmosphere that will haunt the viewer forever. Trust me you will like this classic horror film from JAPAN .

Into the Mirror ( 2003 ) - South Korea

Into the Mirror is a 2003 South Korean Horror Film about a series of grisly deaths in a department store , all involving mirrors , and the troubled detective who investigates them . It was the debut film of director Kim- Seong Ho . Some parts of this horror movie are absolutely brilliant . The opening scene, with the doomed girl standing in front of a mirror, is a real stunner! And for the first half hour things move along quite effectively. We get some amazing visuals, mostly concerning mirrors, and good suspense too.

Some parts You find slightly boring with a slow dialog delivery , but this movie is a good horror to watch , specially because of it's some horror jumpy scenes . IT is a nice idea for a horror story and well directed! Give it a try and I think you'll like it!

An american remake of this movie titled as mirrors will release this year ( 2008 ) :

Rinne (2005) - JAPAN

Reincarnation ( Rinne ) is a 2005 Japanese horror Smash Hit directed by the same director of Grudge - Takashi Shimizu .
The Story of reincarnation goes as there once was a hotel where a bloody massacre took place and now a filmmaker decided to take this nice idea to make a horror film reagarding this bloody massacre at the exact same hotel . So , as you know the Takashi shimizu's style of film making , like the Grudge , here in this film also things didn't go fine according to the plan and mysterious things started happen very suddenly . So what will happen to the film crew when they shoot there ? will the actors , actresses survive ?
What is happening now , is this happened before ? So lot of questions , of which you will get the answers at the end of the film. It's tightly made . You will really enjoy the story of this film , a good story .

Reincarnation is a ghost story similar to Ju-on in some ways like the same kind of haunted establishment . Lot of people also compared it to The Shining . It's got some jumpy scenes , few gory scenes near the end . The performances are all good , the sound , background music is very good. So , definitely overall a very good horror film .

IMDB Info :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456630/

One Missed Call (2003) - JAPAN

One more good horror from the director of Audition and ichi the killer - Takashi Miike .

In One Missed Call , People mysteriously start receiving voicemail messages from their future selves, in the form of the sound of them reacting to their own violent deaths, along with the exact date and time of their future death, listed on the message log. The plot thickens as the surviving characters persue the answers to this mystery which could save their lives.

The story is not so kind a great , but the horror scenes were very good . It simply shows the brilliance of Takashi Miike . He is an excellent filmmaker . The picture gets suspense, horror, shocks, grisly terror and several eerie scenes. The film displays hair-rising and horrifying images with a bit of blood and graphical gore.Mysterious and sinister atmosphere is well made by the photographer Yamamamoto. The trademark "ringtone of death" from this film had become rather popular, and was actually used as a ringtone and background music for unofficial haunted houses .

There are other two sequels of this movie , but in my opinion they are useless , only first part is good . There is an american remake also which released this year , but it is also not as good as the original .

The Eye (2002) - ( HONG KONG )

The Eye is a 2002 Cantonese horror film directed by Oxide Pang Chun And Danny Pang.

The Eye is a story of a blind girl who gets a cornea transplant so that she would be able to see again. However, she got more than what she bargained for when she realised she could even see ghosts. And some of these ghosts are down right unfriendly. So she embarks on a journey to find the origins of her cornea and to reveal the history of the previous dead owner ...

This movie has two remakes -

1.) Naina - Indian ( 2005 )
2.) The Eye - USA ( 2008 )

Naina , The indian remake - Its release caused controversy in India because its depiction of the protagonist seeing ghosts after receiving a Cornea Transplant was similar to existing fears in India surrounding corneal transplants and it was feared the film would discourage people from
donating cornea or seeking corneal transplants .

But in my opinion , the original one - Chinese version was the best . The scenes are not little scary but too scary . When i was watching this movie on my PC with headphones applied one scene from this movie really chilled me out .

Great horror to watch for and keeping in your collection .

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) - ( SOUTH KOREA )

This movie is a great Psychological horror from South Korea directed by Kim Jee- Woon and is both the highest-grossing Korean horror film and the first to be screened in American theatres.

An American remake of this movie starring Emily Browning and Arielle Kebbel as the sisters is slated for 2008 release date .

It is a story about Two sisters who, after spending time in a mental institution, return to the home of their father and cruel stepmother...and what happens after that ??? well that's the story . This movie is combination of horror , Psychology and suspense . Some scenes of this movie are really pretty scary . But you have to watch this movie with the full attention because of it's ending twist . Every part is important to be with the story .

Definitely the best horror from South Korea , needs to be watched . At some places storyline is quite slow but it doesn't affect too much .

THESIS ( 1996 ) - SPAIN

One more good spanish horror flick of 1996 - THESIS directed by Alejandro Amenabar.

"Tesis" is not only a tantalizing Horror Thriller, but is also an intelligent study of people's fascination with death and the imagery of death.

Thesis has a few more topical similarities with Ring, there's a video tape that kills in this one too although in this case it's not an urban myth but a snuff movie. Angela is doing her thesis on audio visual violence when she finds a snuff video - and let me tell you, what is on this video is just as frightening as the famous well footage in Ring.

Whilst Ring was based on the urban myth, the horror and suspense in Thesis feels a lot closer because of the extremely sinister subject matter and us knowing full well there will be some sort of body count that will be depicted in characteristically UGLY stomach churning style.

Thesis manages to be thought provoking, raising many questions (along with your hair), it has a dig at itself and the issue of violence but it succeeds best of all as a very well made psychological thriller.

Thrilling from the first to the last minute, and sometimes quite shocking and disturbing, "Tesis" is a movie that will definitely not disappoint you if you're looking for suspense. The acting in the movie is very good.

So , one more Horror film for your collection .

The Devil's Backbone (2001) - SPAIN

Now the Spanish Horror OF 2001 - The Devil's Backbone directed by Guillermo del Toro .

The Devil's Backbone by del Toro takes us into a boys' orphanage during the Spanish Civil War. In the orphanage, something else of the supernatural kind is quietly raging and we see it all through the eyes of Carlos, our young protagonist in this creepy little flick. Aside from being dumped, he has to cope with living in an orphanage out in the middle of a desert and being picked on by the resident bully, Jaime. To top it all off the poor boy can't even get a good night's sleep because "the one who sighs" keeps waking him up…
The opening titles itself is a work of art and it gets better. Infused with creepy atmospherics (dim hallways, dark chambers and eerie sound effects) that is up there with Ring, it ups the ante with some fantastic but chilling effects. You will swept into along the orphanage's dark secrets and the underbelly of the characters, each with their own secret.
I'm a massive fan of the horror genre, but I don't like ghost stories. To me, ghost stories are a poor manifestation of the genre. It's not the idea of ghosts that's the problem, it's the way the stories are presented; often dull, slow moving and uninteresting, and those are things that do not make a good movie. However, there is an exception to every rule; and this film is the case with that one. The Devil's Backbone is a mesmerising and inventive addition to the ghost story tradition. The film moves slowly, but that is a definite advantage to it. The slow pace allows us to get to know, and even care for the characters before the horror starts, and this makes the horror all the more potent when it does start. The Devil's Backbone has been touted as 'the Spanish Sixth Sense'

During the director's commentary in the DVD, del Toro stated that out of all the movies he made, this was the one he loved most.

This film was #61 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments for its various scenes in which the ghost is seen. It was rated the #5 horror movie of all time by Rotten Tomatoes and Currently holds a 91 % rating there .

One thing you will instantly notice about this film is the fantastic cinematography. There are some shots that are incredibly beautiful.

So , a good ghost story for you to watch.

Suspiria (1977) - ( ITLAY )

NEXT one is Italian Horror Classic SUSPIRIA directed by Dario Argento .

It is a story about a newcomer of a fancy ballet academy who gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.

Entertainment Weekly rated the film #18 in its top 25 scariest movies of all time and said it had "the most vicious murder scene ever filmed." Suspiria is often considered Argento's finest film and a classic of the horror genre.

This movie was number 24 on the cable channel Bravo's list of the "100 Scariest Movie Moments".

It's a very good movie to taste the classic horror genre . But believe me , it is much much better than some of today's horror films .

So , one more horror for your addition . Keep voting and if You Want the movie links then simply mail me .

Ichi the Killer - ( 2001) - ( JAPAN )

This time guys another masterpiece from the same director of audition - Takashi Miike

Ichi The Killer -
One of the most Goriest and Darkly Humorous film .

Ichi The Killer starts Tadanobu Asano who is Kakihara - very sadistic and cruel Yakuza murderer who is distrupts after his boss is brutally killed . There are lots of gory and violent scenes , lots of slashing in this movie , extreme violent, rapes , sexual arousals through killing , too disturbing that you won't find in any modern traditional movie .

perfect for those who likes to watch bloody , violent or gory horror .

This film is based on Manga - a comic book . A lot of the Violence in this movie is actually over the top . It's not like some ghostly scary movie , but it's a totally shocking and freaking masterpiece . lots of blood flowing .

Most of you who haven't watched it before might be shocked certainly when you watch it for the first time .

Karanlik Sular - ( 1995 ) - ( TURKEY )

This time A horror from Turkey , Unique in many ways, and considered the best Turkish horror film by international reviewers, Karanlik Sular knows how to create an eerie and uncanny atmosphere where reason gives way to hallucination, poetry can turn into nightmare, and vice versa. In fact, it's a heady, twisting art-horror hybrid that takes as its theme nothing less than the meaning of life and death.

So , Another good horror but this time from turkey .

Final Destination Series ( USA )

This is again a good series to watch for the Horror genre fans . There are total of three parts released till date , 4th part is in production . All the three parts are better in their own place .
But in my opinion the second part was the best , specially that accident scene in the starting of second part .

These all three films basically deals with the premonition which all the main characters in all the three parts encountered with and what happens after this . It is explained that you can't cheat death . Death will always follow you by making it's own path . You will see lots of slashing in these movies .

So another good horror to watch .

Haute tension ( 2003 ) - France

This Time a very good horror flick from France - " Haute Tension " also known as High Tension released in 2003 and directed by Alexandre Aja.

This is again a gory and violent based Horror with a good story line and some good scary Jumpy Scenes . Best described as a Bloody, intense, psychological terror .

It is a story about Two college friends, Marie and Alexa, who encounter loads of trouble (and blood) while on holiday at Alexa's parent's country home when a mysterious killer invades their quiet getaway.

Again a good horror with a mystery element in it .

Check this one also .

SAW series - (USA)

Here is the next excellent horror series from Hollywood - SAW . directed by James Wan .

There are total of four parts of SAW 1, 2 ,3 & 4 .

These four movies mainly focuses on blood , gory and violence to make us jump us from our seats due to horror . Too violent in nature , this movie has a great storyline with a mystery element . All the four parts are very good . You can judge by yourself that which one is better .

It was filmed in only 18 days along side James Wan, Marcos Zarvous and Gregg Hoffman.

Saw is focused on two men who find themselves locked in a disused bathroom with instructions for one to kill the other, or he and his family will be killed in turn. The characters attempt to escape while the police investigate and attempt to capture the criminal responsible, the " JIGSAW KILLER " .

Saw occupies the third slot on Bravo's Even Scarier Movie Moments for the scene in which a character must cut off his own foot.

For me the first part was marvellous , but the other three were also good . so don't miss this one , great horror to watch for .

This movie has one of the best opening scenes any movie ever have . That I am not going to tell you ... as it will spoil the story . Starting scene strongly attaches you to the screen . It is story about a detective who is trying to find the cause of a string of suicides. No need to tell you extra , go and check it yourself . This film was played in various international films festivals and received various awards , good storyline with a mystery element . Another horrror i would recommend you .

Audition ( 1999 ) - ( Japanese )

Audition - another classic japanese horror masterpiece by famous controversial director - Takashi Miike , Best described as a disturbing masterpiece , more graphic in nature .
My personal favourite . It is based on the novel by Ryu Murakami of te same title

Audition tells the story of a man " Aoyama " who previously lost his wife , seven years after her death Aoyama son urges him to try and find a new wife because his face not getting any younger as he is going through his middle age . Aoyama talks to a friend of his who is in the film industry . Well his friend says that why do we not hold a Phony Audition and try to meet some girls for you indirectly . Aoyama goes well with his friend's plan and eventually he does find a woman , what happens next that you have to find after watching this film . This film has one of the most shocking and dramatic ending any film ever has . The first part of the movie is pretty slow , some may find it even boring , but to understand the movie you have to go with the full movie .

The second half is actually what makes this movie into a classic , specially the shocking ending . This movie is to violent and graphic in nature as compared to any other horror movie you have ever seen . So , strictly not recommended for people with weaker heart .

Great acting and dialogues .

Overall a great story horror with excellent graphic scenes . Best horror i have ever seen . A Horror film that definitely needs to be experienced .

It is basically a story of some Scientists in the Antarctic who are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills.

Shutter ( 2004 ) - ( Thailand )

Shutter is another great horror film , but his time from Thailand . An American remake of this movie hits the theaters this year ( 2008 ) .

It is a story about a young photographer and his girlfriend who started discovering mysterious shadows in their photographs after a tragic accident. They soon learn that you can not escape your past.

This movie has a great storyline , better than the Ju-On series . This Asian horror thriller rises above its flaws to deliver a tightly constructed, affecting, and downright terrifying ride.

One more horror with a twisted great ending .

IMDB Info :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0440803/

American Remake :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482599/

Try to watch the original Thai version first .

The Sixth Sense (1999) - ( USA )

" The Sixth Sense " , the film which had already written it's name in the classic movies list of cinema , the film which will never be easily forgotten in the coming years .

The best ending i have ever scene in any movie , simply brilliant .

The Sixth Sense is a 1999 Academy Award nominated Psychological horror film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan that tells the story of Cole, a troubled, isolated boy who claims to be able to see and talk to the dead and an equally troubled child psychologist ( Bruce Willis ) who tries to help him.

Now this movie is actually more a mystery than a horror , yet it's some parts are pretty scary .

Well no doubt the ending is the strength of the movie .

so , give it a try if you haven't watched it earlier .

The Shining (1980) ( USA )

The Shining is a 1980 Horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick , Based on Stephen King's Novel of the same name . The film stars Jack Nicholson as tormented writer Jack Torrance , Shelley Duvall as his wife , Wendy , and Danny Lloyd as their son , Danny .
This spellbinding 1980 horror epic is one of the true masterpieces to come out of the genre. Ostensibly a haunted house story, it manages to traverse a complex world of incipient madness, spectral murder and supernatural visions... and also makes you jump. If Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is not the best haunted house movie ever made, it is certainly among the most intricately constructed. A must watch horror movie. An immortal classic.

Ju-On series ( Japanese )

Another Great Horror Flick from Japan , The Ju- On Series also known as " The Grudge"

These two films - Ju-on 1 & 2 are directed by Takashi Shimizu .

Ju- on has got a great story . It's about a haunted house that has been cursed because of something awful had happened there some months before and anybody that comes in contact with house .....hmmm... Let's just say some bad stuff goes down .

So , it's a traditional japanese ghost story that features more pale skin , japanese girls with long black hair .

These movies are one of the big names in horror cinema , the heavy hitters .

The Ju-on series are quite similar to ring series in a simple aspect that they don't rely on gore or bloody guts to scare people , they have mainly the mysterious and the mood setting bone chilling atmosphere similar to the stuff found in " Ring " .

Actually Ju-on has some few violent scenes , artistically it is more violent than the Ring movies , specially at the begining and the very end with what actually happened in the house that makes it cursed actually it is not that violent at at the begining , but yet a fair warning from me .

Ju-on series is different from other horror films in the way they are presented in a non-linear fashion , so you have someone being the main character at one point of the story and then you see the other side characters become the main characters later . so it's kind of a pieces put together which is pretty cool . It will definitely scare you .

The first part is lot better than the first , second part has the same kind of thing happening over and over again , but that will not affects it's scary nature .

So , it's another box office hit horror film that you must check and keep in your collection .

There are the american remakes of this one also , but in my opinion , japanese version is the best , much more scary than the american one .

IMDB Info :

Ju-on 1 : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330500/

Ju-on 2 : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364385/

American Version :

The Grudge : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0391198/

The Grudge 2 : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433386/

Try to watch japanese versions first even if you have to watch with the subtitles .

The Ring Series ( Japanese )

When you are talking about the horror , you can't get away from talking about The Ring directed by Hideo Nakata . This is the story about a Video Tape after watching which you get killed in seven days . Why ??? , Well that's the suspense which you will get after watching the movie . There are lot of memorable scenes in this one , a great story originally based on the novel by Koji Suzuki . There is an american remake of this movie also , but most people don't know that beyond the american remakes "The Ring 1" and " The Ring 2 " , there are more Japanese Ring Movies as a collection called "Ring Anthology Of Terror " .

This film is the highest grossing horror film in Japan at 15.9 billion yen ($137.7 million) and is also considered the most frightening horror movie in Japan.

There are total of four japanese horror Ring movies - Ringu , Ringu 2 , Ringu 0 : Birthday , Rasen .

The truth is three of these movies are actually pretty good , only one of them is pretty crappy .

The Original Ring movie ( Ringu - First part ) plays out like a great detective story , some mystery . It's fairly close to the book but witth the exception of the main character in the movie is the girl instead of guy in the original novel . Overall the ring movies are a great way to get into horror . They have got all the traditional elements , the supernatural elements , not to much gore , it is basically based on the psychological , the spook factor , u know like what could be there behind the corner , curses and ghosts .

The Ring 0 , the last movie which was made is actually the prequel of all of the ring series , there are some emotional and character driven elements in this last part which was lacking in ringu 2.

Well the best one is definitely the first part Ringu , Ringu 2 was not good at all .

Mainly three parts are good Ringu , Rasen , Ringu:0

but watch all the parts for completing the series .

I highly recommend th first part Ringu , Rasen - the other sequel beyond Ringu 2 , it was based on second book named Spiral brings more of a medical approach to it , more scientific , trying to explain the curse .

so who hasn't watched the Ring yet , go and watch it . Great Horror .
