The Devil's Backbone (2001) - SPAIN

Now the Spanish Horror OF 2001 - The Devil's Backbone directed by Guillermo del Toro .

The Devil's Backbone by del Toro takes us into a boys' orphanage during the Spanish Civil War. In the orphanage, something else of the supernatural kind is quietly raging and we see it all through the eyes of Carlos, our young protagonist in this creepy little flick. Aside from being dumped, he has to cope with living in an orphanage out in the middle of a desert and being picked on by the resident bully, Jaime. To top it all off the poor boy can't even get a good night's sleep because "the one who sighs" keeps waking him up…
The opening titles itself is a work of art and it gets better. Infused with creepy atmospherics (dim hallways, dark chambers and eerie sound effects) that is up there with Ring, it ups the ante with some fantastic but chilling effects. You will swept into along the orphanage's dark secrets and the underbelly of the characters, each with their own secret.
I'm a massive fan of the horror genre, but I don't like ghost stories. To me, ghost stories are a poor manifestation of the genre. It's not the idea of ghosts that's the problem, it's the way the stories are presented; often dull, slow moving and uninteresting, and those are things that do not make a good movie. However, there is an exception to every rule; and this film is the case with that one. The Devil's Backbone is a mesmerising and inventive addition to the ghost story tradition. The film moves slowly, but that is a definite advantage to it. The slow pace allows us to get to know, and even care for the characters before the horror starts, and this makes the horror all the more potent when it does start. The Devil's Backbone has been touted as 'the Spanish Sixth Sense'

During the director's commentary in the DVD, del Toro stated that out of all the movies he made, this was the one he loved most.

This film was #61 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments for its various scenes in which the ghost is seen. It was rated the #5 horror movie of all time by Rotten Tomatoes and Currently holds a 91 % rating there .

One thing you will instantly notice about this film is the fantastic cinematography. There are some shots that are incredibly beautiful.

So , a good ghost story for you to watch.
